Resolving and Evolving...?

I love the holidays-all holidays. I love traditions too! Following traditions, creating traditions...recreating traditions. Yet, when I tried to think of any New Year traditions that I had, my mind went blank-couldn't think of one. Does hectic activity and elaborate and inappropriate expectations count? If so, then, yes-yes I have New Year traditions. So,on December 31,I again joined the ranks of all others to resolve to do something more,less,differently....But, first I had to squeeze in "one" last thing for the year 2012: one last yoga class (YES-I proved that I practiced...once!), one bit of talk/tea time with a friend and then rapidly reading tips/hints/favorite blogs and trying to recall last year's results to effectively plan and "OWN" 2013. The boys squeezed in one last viewing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the husband felt strongly that he needed to make and eat bread (thoughtful guy-that one's fun for the whole family) and I...? I followed what must be a New Year tradition and watched 'Eat,Pray,Love'-sighing dreamily at the sights and sounds until I realized...RATS! I resolved to go on a dreamy 3 month, 3 country sabbatical this time last year! Are you getting a better picture of what "elaborate and inappropriate" translates to in my world?! This year I have resolved to begin creating at my "Inspired Work Space." (Not to be confused with the "Mom Cave" that gave up it's life amidst the ONE cold weekend of November 2012 and returned to it's former life of "Coat Closet." Sure, I have to battle Imaginext dinosaurs and hurdle the LEGO obstacle course to reach this new Inspired space...but,I like a good challenge.) I am also resolving to give myself a break and take it down a notch. I am really excited about this year and, as always, open to suggestion to find some fabulous and healthy, non-neurotic traditions to begin celebrating the New Year. I'll get right on that, too...as soon as I start and finish 'The Life of Pi' before returning to work tomorrow! So very grateful that I have 364 days left to evolve...

A day without guilt....?

I stayed home with my two year old today. He woke me at 2am,then again at 3am...and by 4am-I gave in and emailed my boss. Something like, "my bleary-eyed, cranky self with no inner monologue will not be at work today. No thanks necessary :)" It has always been difficult for me to cancel or "no-show" to anything, especially work. Even now, as a parent, I still find myself cringing with each email I send apologizing for my absence. Recently,I toured my rising Kindergartener's new "big boy school." 2013...floating to the Archipelago of Last Years

As I watched 'Rudolph's Shiny New Year' with my boys on New Year's Eve, I thought about this past year. Would I visit 2013 in the Archipelago of Last Years? I didn't climb Everest (a feat I was SURE I would accomplish by my 30s.) In fact, I don't recall leaving town-really... I didn't change jobs. I didn't update my wardrobe (although, I would have LOVED TO!) I didn't create my backyard oasis...AGAIN! in 2013, I laughed-ALOT!!! I laughed with family, friends and mostly AT my kids (particularly when they made genius comments and showed me that magic and innocence still exist-the oldest, for instance, wants to go to college and enter the 'Scare Program'...go for it, dude! Once a teacher-always a teacher

Before the new school year begins-I need a new look! Me-myself? No, I'm not that bold-my bedroom! My cozy haven that provides a therapeutic spot for weary days or nights-or even allows me to hide under pillows from a howling 3 year old (the 5 year old knows all my spots!) As I stood back and looked in at my hard work's accomplishments, I sighed with content...and then laughed! I had created three-that's right-THREE "work stations"...in my bedroom! One by the window-a cozy nook with great light to improve my yoga study and planning or to finish that children's book I started...in 2001! Then there's the second station-piled high with books related to behavior and girl bullies-for my more serious contemplations. And the third-next to the bed, of course, where I can easily drift off to sleep after reading all I really need to know to be a better mom (and I wonder why I never get a full night's sleep!)
